Malachite Beads![]() Malachite beads are made from a mineral scientifically called copper carbonate hydroxide. In fact, malachite is an important copper ore. It is often found in combination with azurite, and is similar in chemical composition. Zaire is an important source of malachite. The name comes from the Greek "mallow" which means "a green herb" (no doubt associating the color of this mineral with that of herbs.) It is perhaps the oldest known green pigment. Used in paint, it is moderately long lasting, but sensitive to acids and heat. It has distinctive banding of light and dark green that make it easily recognized as well as a popular gemstone bead in jewelry supplies. It is usually coated with a clear protective polish, which can usually be washed off. In jewelry making, some very complimentary stones for use in combination with malachite include turquoise, coral, mother-of-pearl, azurite, jasper, onyx, and pearls. Red malachite is actually banded jasper, but shares the banded color pattern and name with malachite. Manmade malachite is quite prevalent in the market of gemstone beads, and very difficult to differentiate from natural malachite. Imitation malachite has very regular black or white banding. Malachite is not a birthstone or anniversary stone. However, among new age thinkers it is associated with protection, power, peace, love, and success in business. common treatments: none special care: avoid impact, abrasion, and harsh chemicals hardness: 3.5 - 4 |
