Howlite Beads

Howlite beads are made from a mineral scientifically called calcium boro-silicate hydroxide. Howlite was named for Henry How, a Nova Scotia geologist who discovered it. Due to its softness, it is often carved into figurines and sculpture as well as being used in jewelry making.

Its natural color is white or gray, but is usually white with gray veins. It accepts dye well, due to its porosity, and is often dyed to imitate other gemstones such as turquoise or lapis lazuli. Occasionally, howlite can fluoresce under UV light.

Howlite is believed by new age thinkers to help in the elimination of selfishness, pain, stress, rage, and rudeness. It's gentle simplicity is also believed to aid in sleep and help one obtain wisdom from their dreams, as well as to heighten creativity. It is not a birthstone.

As an element in one's jewelry supplies, it is often carved into cabochons or gemstone beads. In jewelry making, gemstone beads of naturally colored howlite make a wonderful partner to hematite. The gray veins compliment the gunmetal gray of the hematite making a duet that is hard to beat.

common treatments: frequently dyed (except white howlite)

special care: avoid impact and abrasion (dyed howlite can bleed color on skin or light clothing)
