Citrine beads are made from a mineral that is a member of the quartz family. It is found worldwide, but a significant source is Brazil. Most citrine on the market today is natural amethyst that has been heat treated to turn it yellow. Its color can be permanently changed if left in sunlight for prolonged periods.

In ancient times, citrine was carried as a protection against snake venom and evil thoughts. It is known as the "merchants' stone," due to the belief that it attracts wealth and abundance. Citrine is an alternative to topaz as the birthstone for November. It is associated with the astrological signs of Gemini, Aries, Libra, and Leo.

Citrine is transparent clear to yellow, gold, orange, and brown. Madeira citrine, a darker orange, is named after the color of the wine. Iron content gives citrine it's color. Of all the gemstone beads used in jewelry making, citrine is one of the more affordable transparent minerals, making it an ideal member of one's jewelry supplies.
