Chrysoprase Beads - see Chalcedony Beads![]() Chrysoprase beads are green colored chalcedony, which is a micro-crystalline quartz, called that because it is formed not of one single crystal but many finely grained microcrystals. Other gemstone beads considered members of the micro-crystalline family include agate, chrysoprase, petrified wood, jasper, carnelian, sardonyx, and onyx. Significant sources are Africa and the United States. The name is derived from the Greek "chrysos prason" meaning gold leek. Chalcedony can be many colors, but usually is white to gray, blueish or lavender toned gray, green, brown, or black. Chrysoprase derives its color from nickel. Chrysoprase is found in Australia, Austria, Brazil, Czech Republic, Russia, and the United States. It can be either opaque or translucent. Although dying is a common treatment for jewelry supplies made of chalcedony, it is usually considered permanent and does not affect its value. Its value is primarily based upon its size, translucency, and color evenness. Chrysoprase is a May birthstone. It was once believed to offer spiritual protection and was known as a "victory stone". It has historically been carved into furnishings and statuary, as well as used in jewelry making, where it is carved into cabochons, gemstone beads, and other jewelry supplies. Beads of chrysoprase blend beautifully with carnelian. common treatments: often dyed special care: avoid prolonged exposure to high heat hardness: 6.5 - 7 (c) Copyright 2003 Sun Country Gems |
