Chalcedony Beads![]() Chalcedony beads, also spelled calcedony or cassidoine, are made of a material called a micro-crystalline quartz, due to the fact that it is formed not of one single crystal but many finely grained microcrystals. Other members of the micro-crystalline family include agate, chrysoprase (green chalcedony,) petrified wood, jasper, carnelian, sardonyx, and onyx. Significant sources of chalcedony are Africa and the United States. Chalcedony can be many colors, but usually is white to gray, blueish or lavender toned gray, green, brown, or black. It can be either opaque or translucent. Although dying is a common treatment for chalcedony gemstone beads, it is considered permanent and does not affect their value. The green variety of chalcedony is known as chrysoprase. Chrysoprase is found in Australia, Austria, Brazil, Czech Republic, Russia, and the United States. Chrysoprase is a May birthstone. In jewelry supplies. chalcedony is often found in the form of cabochons, but many times also as plain or fancy cut gemstone beads. In jewelry making, it pairs beautifully with angelite and azurite malachite. common treatments: often dyed special care: avoid prolonged exposure to high heat hardness: 6.5 - 7 |
