Amazonite Beads

amazonite beads, jewelry supplies, gemstone beads, jewelry making

Amazonite beads are made of a mineral scientifically known as a microcline feldspar. It is also called amazonestone or perthite. In spite of the fact that deposits of it have never been found there, amazonite is named after the Amazon River in South America. Significant sources of amazonite include the United States, Brazil, India, Russia, and Madagascar.

Amazonite bead colors vary from opaque to translucent green, blue green, or pale aqua. They are sometimes found with white streaks. Amazonite is sometimes confused with jade.

In jewelry supplies it is most often found as either cabochons or gemstone beads (plain, faceted, and fancy shapes.) It makes a fine companion to blue opal, fancy jasper, aquamarine, malachite azurite, apatite, fluorite, or turquoise. Amazonite adds a wonderful opaque light aqua to jewelry that is complimented by transparent aquas or different shades of opaque aqua stones, as well as clear crystals and freshwater pearls in jewelry making.

The astrological sign of amazonite is Virgo. Amazonite is also a birthstone for the month of December.

It is believed by some to make married life happier, as it balances, soothes, and harmonizes male vs. female energies. New age thinkers believe it makes the skin better and to energize lazy teenagers. (Hey, you never know what will work with teenagers.) No doubt this is because the color blends with every skin type.
